Step-by-step guide to configure your Mikrotik router

1. Logging into Your Mikrotik Router

To configure your Mikrotik router, you'll need to log in. Follow these steps to get started:

1 Install Winbox

Download Winbox from the Mikrotik Download Page:

https://mikrotik.com/download

Important: Make sure to choose Winbox version 3.x (not version 4.x), as this guide focuses on version 3.x.

2 Launch Winbox and Connect

Open Winbox on your computer. You should see a login screen.

Connection Options:

  • Option 1: Enter your Router's IP address in the "Connect To" field.
    192.168.88.1

    Default IP address

  • Option 2: Click on "Neighbours" - you will see a MAC address and click on it

Login Credentials:

admin
(blank – no password)

Note: If you've previously set a password, enter it here. For new routers, check behind the router for the default password.

Click Connect to log in. If successful, you'll be directed to the main Winbox interface.

2. Checking Your Mikrotik RouterOS Version

Mikrotik has different configuration options based on the RouterOS version. Before proceeding, it's important to check which version your router is running.

Once logged in, check the top of the Winbox window. Your current RouterOS version will be displayed here.

Identify your version:

  • If you see version 6.x.x, make sure to update to version 7.x.x

3. Recommended: Reset Router Configuration
